The fields, up close
All our photos of the milkweed fields: the flowers, the monarchs, the caterpillars and the people who grow the plant. Tap an image to open it full size.
The field
Common milkweed fields in full bloom, from morning to sunset. In Saguenay in 2026, and in the summers of 2021 and 2022.
The flowers
Umbels of dozens of small star-shaped flowers, rich in nectar, from bud to full bloom.
Monarchs
The monarch butterfly depends on milkweed: it is the only plant its caterpillars eat.
Caterpillars and chrysalises
From tiny caterpillar to jade-green chrysalis, the whole metamorphosis happens on a single plant.
Pollinators and wildflowers
A milkweed field is a shared habitat: bumblebees, butterflies, hawk moths, beetles and native wildflowers.
Fall and the silk
In September, the pods split open and release their seeds, each attached to silk. That silk becomes insulation.
The growers
No growers, no material. In Saguenay, our partners grow milkweed.
